It’s official - I have gone coconuts for the Coconut & Rice Puffs from Ape Snacks! Although they have been around for some time now, I have only just got my hands on them and it was definitely worth the wait!
Ape Snacks was founded by a guy called Zack who was frustrated by the lack on genuinely delicious and healthy snacks on the market. He wanted to change that and these puffs certainly hit the brief.
The puffs come in three delicious flavours: Lightly Salted, Thai Chilli and Cheese. As they’re all made using coconut, I was worried that the coconut flavour may not compliment the flavours (especially the cheese) but actually, you cannot taste the coconut at all.
LIGHTLY SALTED
These puffs smell so, so good and taste equally great! The puffs are crunchy but light, and are perfectly salted.
Usually, salty snacks leave me feeling guilty that I’ve munched down on an unhealthy treat but at only 115 calories a bag, you can definitely eat these feeling guilt-free.
CHEESE
Holy moly - these puffs smell CHEEEEESEY! As soon as you open the pack, the cheese aroma hits you instantly. It isn’t your typical cheese-flavour smell, nor is it a stinking bishop! To be honest, it reminded me of the individually wrapped cheese you can buy for burgers.
Although smelling cheesy, they look rather plain and are not the expected orange colour that you see with other cheese-flavoured snacks. This is because all of the puffs are vegan and so Ape haven’t used dried cheese as a flavouring, meaning you don’t end up with orange fingers after eating - bonus!
Like smell, they taste cheesy but are definitely moorish. I was unsure if I liked them at first but decided I must have as I finished the entire pack!
THAI CHILLI
This pack was my absolute favourite! Forget everything you know about chilli-flavoured snacks because these puffs are in their very own league!
Chilli snacks are typically “sweet chilli” and all have a very similar taste. These puffs, however, taste exactly like a Red Thai Curry, with a combination of mild spices dancing on your tongue. They have a subtle kick to them but are not too hot.
Across all the flavours, the puffs have the perfect crunch to them and unlike other puffed snacks, they don’t melt in your mouth instantly. It means that they’re easy to transport, too, and won’t end up as crumbs in the packet after being thrown around in your bag.
If you haven’t had the chance to try them yet, go grab some now! They’re available in a variety of stores, including Tesco, ASDA and Sainsbury’s.
